A Prayer for Peace

August 30, 2020

We live in a world full of chaos.
What divides us seems stronger than what unites us.
The debates and arguments fill our social media newsfeeds.
Along the way, we have dehumanized our enemies and those who we disagree.
Lord, we need You.

Peace comes at a price.
You gave up the riches of heaven to live on earth.
You gave up Your power to walk with the marginalized.
You embraced the cross to reconcile us with You and each other.
Pursuing peace for us cost You everything.

We make no mistake; the peace You offer us takes work.
It requires You to search our hearts and motives.
It calls us to see every person created in Your image.
It means speaking the truth in love.
It listens to what we don’t necessarily want to hear.
Yet, we know pursuing the peace You offer can change the world.

So Lord, make us peacemakers.
May we live out the light of the gospel.
May the reality of the cross reconcile us to each other.
As You gave up your power, we relinquish our preferences to bring us together.

We start this new week with the hope of peace.
Sundays remind us of resurrection.
Not all hope is lost.

Amen
