You have walked with your coworkers through a pandemic. Though we still have a long way to go to normal life, I think it’s important to acknowledge how far we have come.
Zoom meetings created more authenticity with our coworkers. We saw where each other lives. Kids and spouses made cameo appearances. A crisis has a fascinating way to unite us together for a common goal.
As we begin reopening and regathering, I believe it’s critical to reflect on how we built relationships with our coworkers. When we humanize and get to know each other, we have better conflict and focus on essential goals.
I want to share four ways to build relationships with your coworkers in this season of transition:
1. Take a random coffee or lunch.
Getting out of the office for unstructured time can bring conversations you never thought. If you have a moment free, see if an individual or group wants to grab coffee or lunch. Talk about their family, interests, and hobbies. You might be surprised at what you discover.
2. Celebrate their social media posts.
You have an opportunity in real-time to celebrate your coworkers. Like and comment on their posts. A small positive interaction on social media can provide goodwill in a working environment.
3. Ask random questions.
If you use Slack, you can create a fun channel. Whatever platform you use, ask a random question. What’s your favorite sandwich? Do you like the Office or Parks and Rec better? What’s your favorite part about summer? You can Slack or text. These questions can offer the team fun and relief.
4. Plan an outside activity together.
I loved playing basketball with coworkers at the University of Valley Forge. We had some of our best conversations on the court. You can take a hike. Plan a barbecue. These activity-based opportunities invite you to have a different perspective on the people you work with.
