What reminders of your WHY do you have in your life?
The Buffalo Bills recently drafted Harrison Phillips out of Stanford. He shared with Chris Brown in the article For Harrison Phillips, the NFL was always his why, how he reminded himself of the goal of getting to the NFL. Here are a few ways he kept the reminder of his WHY in front of him:
- He taped the letters NFL on top of his ceiling.
- He set the NFL logo as the background to his phone.
- He got a tattoo with a cross and football.
- He set an alarm to go to bed in college with the title N-F-L.
Moses speaking to the next generation of Israelites in Deuteronomy says this:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Harrison Phillips gives us a living example of Moses’ words in Deuteronomy. Set before yourself and the important people in your life the WHY. When you think of the end in mind, our greatest WHY is the Gospel of Jesus and living out that life-change in him. We need the reminder of the Gospel and our ultimate WHY.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is not just a reminder for you personally, but for the people around us. Do our spouses, kids, family, coworkers, and friends know our WHY? It focuses our time with others on what truly matters and keeps us seeing how Jesus is at work in the lives of those around us.
Wear it. Post it. Share it. Tattoo it. Sharpie it. Talk about it. Repeat it. Do whatever you need to remind yourself of it.
Let me ask you again, what reminders of your WHY do you have in your life? And how are you reminding others?
