A Prayer for Our Kids

July 5, 2020

Nothing takes You by surprise.
You hold the cosmos in place.
No sparrow falls without You knowing.
You have painted the sky with grandeur.

So, Lord, we know you see the future entirely.
Today, we lift up to You, our kids.
They are living through one of the most chaotic times in history.
A pandemic has halted the normal way of life.
The conversation on racism has heightened.
Our political discourse reflects winning rather than loving our neighbor.

Bishop Claude Alexander said this, “What if God is preparing the next greatest generation?”
Oh Lord, what if?
What if our kids would live out the gospel in radical ways?
What if our children can grasp Your image in them and others?
What if our children would move further in racial reconciliation?
What if our children can break down the walls of partisanship?
What if the work You are doing now will give more hope to the future?

Move us to prepare for the next generation right now.
Forgive us of our sins.
Challenge us as adults to do the work of unity.
Let us sacrifice our pride and comfort for the next generation.
Move beyond the view of the present to see the world for our kids.

So, Lord, we pray for our children.
May they take us places we never dreamed.
We know the future starts with us as adults.
In You, we trust – the One who brings life from death.
Move in our hearts and heal this land.

Amen
