A Prayer for the Exhausted

April 29, 2020

Lord, we’re exhausted.
Doctors, physician assistants, nurses, and medical workers have worked non-stop.
National and local government leaders feel the weight of each decision.
Stay at home parents became teachers overnight.
CEOs, COOs, CFOs, etc. have managed this crisis with minimal damages.
Working from home has added more hours, not less.
The retired have lost their sense of routine amid waiting for the world to open.

We pause in the middle of this week and acknowledge our humanity.
The exhaustion of waiting and worrying has caught up with us.
Our patience to extend grace runs lows.
The ability to shutoff has become a rare commodity.
The pace increasingly runs faster and faster.
Remind us that we came from dust, and we are sheep.
Reality can keep us grounded.

Provide us pockets of rest today.
Help us to see the world around us – the creation shouts rebirth in spring.
Give us the wisdom to put down our work.
May we capture the opportunity to connect with those close to us.
Offer us sleep through the whole night.
Our rests communicates our trust in You – You alone never slumbers or sleeps.

Today, we pray for our exhaustion and others.
Redirect our attention to the strength You offer.
We hand You our load and exchange it for Your load.
Exhaustion invites us to experience the depth of Your grace and care.
You bring streams out of deserts.
Surely, You can care for us in subtle and extraordinary ways.
Teach us to rely on You first.

Amen
