Instagram Stories Ideas for Church Leaders

July 14, 2020

Your posting on social media makes a difference, church leader.

Taking a moment to share an update or post a picture invites people to celebrate a church’s life. The absence of communication on social media misses an opportunity for people to see what’s happening, especially in this shutdown season.

Instagram Stories are posts that last for twenty-fours with a range of fun ways to connect with people. You can join the posts with Facebook too.

You may still feel uncomfortable posting as a church leader. Instagram Stories provide a short-term post to build your confidence and consistency in social media. It releases the pressure for a well-crafted post to a more real-time authentic post.

The best way to learn about Stories is to check out stories for yourself. Whether you find yourself as a pastor, staff, or volunteer leader, sharing stories invites people to see the behind the scenes of what’s happening at church.

Today, I want to share a few ideas with you to share Instagram Stories from my experience:

Post a Bible Verse Images from YouVersion

The YouVersion Bible App each day creates images that you can download. You can take these images and place them directly in Instagram Stories. You can see YouVersion’s Stories with the graphics on the “For You” section of the app. Click the image to download.

Boomerang a person serving.

The Boomerang option on Instagram takes a short video that loops back and forth. Capture greeters waving or even the bass player jamming. Boomerangs provide fun connections for people to see behind the scenes of the church.

Quiz People on the Sunday Morning Message

This past Sunday, my pastor shared on Psalm 13. We had a quiz asking basic questions from the message. For example, “What Psalm did we discuss today?” In a fun way, quizzes can redeem social media to help people re-engage the message and connect with the Bible.

Show a video of church at home.

Many of us are still engaging church online from home. It’s critical while we’re social distancing to feel connected. There’s something authentic about seeing people worship in their homes. Stories provide a great short term platform for people to do it.

Ask a question.

You could ask a question like, “What’s your favorite Bible verse?” or “What’s your favorite worship song?” When a person responds, you have the option to share their post. These questions invite engagement and connection with other people.

Send a poll.

In the past, I have polled people on what service they will engage. You can even ask about the message using emojis. A poll provides a quick way for followers to interact.
